FAQ for Cunard

Not everything you need to know, but a good place to start.

What is the Cunard experience?

Cunard is a classic British cruise line that offers a traditional and elegant cruising experience. The focus is on heritage, refined service, and a sense of occasion. The ships are known for their grand public spaces, including majestic ballrooms and sophisticated lounges, and a rich schedule of onboard enrichment and entertainment.

The fare is not all-inclusive, but it does cover your accommodations, all meals in the main dining rooms, and a wide range of activities and entertainment. However, beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions are all an additional cost. The level of dining and amenities you receive depends on the grade of stateroom you book.

The Cunard fleet consists of four “Queens”: the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, and the new Queen Anne. The Queen Mary 2 is the world’s only true ocean liner.

Accommodations are categorized by dining experience: Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess Grill, and Queens Grill. The higher-tier Grill suites offer more space, exclusive restaurants, and butler service.

The atmosphere is a blend of relaxed daytime and elegant evenings. While days are casual, evenings follow a specific dress code. Most nights are “smart attire,” and voyages typically feature one or two “Gala Evenings” where formal wear is encouraged. Men often wear a tuxedo or dark suit, and women wear cocktail dresses or evening gowns.

Dining on Cunard is a cornerstone of the experience. Guests are assigned to a main dining room based on their stateroom category. The higher-tier Grill restaurants offer an exclusive, a la carte experience with open seating. Menus are refined and classic, with an emphasis on flawless service and a sense of occasion.

Cunard is known for its classic itineraries and voyages across the globe. A signature offering is the Transatlantic Crossing on the Queen Mary 2. The line also offers sailings to Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Alaska, and a variety of world cruises and Grand Voyages.

Yes, Cunard welcomes children on board. The ships offer a variety of supervised youth programs for different age groups, as well as family-friendly amenities like pools and lounges. However, the overall atmosphere is more adult-oriented, and the experience is best suited for families who appreciate a quieter and more refined vacation.

Gratuities, referred to as Hotel and Dining Service Charge, are automatically added to your onboard account for each person in your stateroom. This is an additional cost not included in the base fare. An additional service charge is also automatically applied to all bar, specialty dining, and spa purchases.

A Transatlantic Crossing is a signature Cunard voyage, which typically sails between New York and Southampton, England, on the Queen Mary 2. This journey is a destination in itself, with a focus on enjoying the classic sea day experience, from formal afternoon tea and dancing in the ballroom to lectures and spa treatments.

The “Grills” experience is Cunard’s highest tier of luxury accommodation and service, reserved for guests staying in Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites. Guests in these suites have exclusive access to their own private restaurants, lounges, and an outdoor terrace, with the added benefit of a dedicated concierge and butler service.
