Why I Love Virgin Voyages: My Honest Take on the Best Cruise Experience

Contents
Virgin Voyages stands out, and not just because they’re new or flashy. They do cruising differently.

I can’t help but light up when I talk about Virgin Voyages. I’ve worked in travel for over ten years and have logged more than a year at sea, yet I always find myself coming back to Virgin.

Virgin Voyages stands out, and not just because they’re new or flashy. They do cruising differently. And for me, that difference comes down to three big things: a truly inclusive culture, a dining scene that rivals land-based restaurants, and entertainment that’s bold, modern, and fun. Of course, there are plenty of smaller touches that make a huge impact, too. If you want the real scoop on why I keep returning to Virgin Voyages and why I recommend them to my clients, this is it.

The Most Inclusive Experience at Sea

Let’s start with the number one reason: Virgin Voyages is the most genuinely inclusive cruise line I’ve ever sailed. When they say “everyone is welcome,” they mean it. It’s not just lip service. You feel it the second you walk onboard. There’s this relaxed energy that hits you immediately, and it comes from knowing you can show up as yourself. No need to dial it back or wonder if you fit in.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, and honestly for anyone who’s ever felt out of place on a cruise, Virgin is a breath of fresh air. The crew comes from every corner of the globe and brings their whole selves to work. Guests do too. Couples of all kinds, friend groups, solo travelers, and people of every age mix and mingle like it’s the most natural thing in the world. No judgment, no awkward moments. You see it at dinner, at the pool, and especially during Scarlet Night, when the entire ship lights up and everyone lets loose together.

There’s a confidence that comes from being in a space where you’re not just accepted but celebrated. Drag shows, queer talent on stage, and allyship everywhere. It’s the kind of environment I wish existed everywhere in the travel industry. Virgin Voyages has nailed it.

Food That Surpasses Every Expectation

I’ll say it plainly: Virgin Voyages has the best food at sea. Period. They scrapped the old cruise dining model. No main dining room, no buffets, and no upcharges for every good meal. Instead, you have access to a collection of specialty restaurants, all included in your cruise fare.

This isn’t just a variety play. The quality and creativity are top-tier. Extra Virgin serves handmade pasta and rich Italian classics. Pink Agave feels like you’re out at a trendy spot in Mexico City, with bold flavors and inventive cocktails. The Wake serves up classic steakhouse fare with a view, perfect for a date night. Razzle Dazzle puts a creative spin on plant-based dishes and comfort food, and you can actually taste the care that goes into every plate.

The Dock is my personal favorite hangout. Think Mediterranean small plates, skewers grilled to order, fresh pita, and views for days. The Social Club brings a bit of nostalgia with snacks, hot dogs, and shakes. And the pizza, made fresh, thin, and crispy, hits the spot every time.

Beyond the restaurants, you’ll find creative snacks at every turn, a grab-and-go spot for late-night cravings, and even a cold-pressed juice bar to balance out all the indulgence. The food scene alone would be enough to win me over, but on Virgin Voyages, it’s just the start.

Entertainment That’s Anything but Typical

If you’re picturing old-school cruise shows, forget it. Virgin Voyages reimagined shipboard entertainment with a level of energy and originality I never expected. Every show feels designed for people who actually love going out and seeing something new. The talent is incredible, with many of the performers coming from Broadway, the West End, or top-tier nightlife. You feel the difference.

“Duel Reality” is a circus-style spectacle that keeps you on the edge of your seat and is the first show to move from ship to shore. Plus, there’s live music across the ship, pop-up performances you just stumble into, and even secret parties and immersive events.

And then there’s Scarlet Night, the party to end all parties. Picture the entire ship dressed in red, dancing on the pool deck, and celebrating together until late. It’s inclusive, a little outrageous, and absolutely unforgettable.

What I love most is that entertainment on Virgin Voyages is never predictable. There’s always a twist, whether it’s a karaoke session that ends up being the highlight of your night or a hidden bar that you only discover if you know the right code. You’re always part of the story, not just a spectator.

Adults Only: A Different Kind of Relaxation

One of the most obvious differences? No kids. Virgin Voyages is adults-only, which means the entire experience is built for grown-ups. The atmosphere is calm when you want it to be, lively when you’re in the mood, but never overrun by the chaos you get on family-focused ships.

The pool areas are relaxing. The bars are chic and never overcrowded. The spa is peaceful and has everything from a thermal suite to a mud room and salt chamber. You can start your morning with yoga on the deck, join a high-energy spin class, or just grab a coffee and people-watch in the sunshine.

The spaces are designed to invite connection while also providing you with plenty of room to recharge. Whether you want to be social or need some alone time, you’ll always find the right spot.

Wellness, Your Way

Virgin Voyages understands that wellness means different things to everyone. You can hit the well-equipped gym, run laps on the outdoor track, or take part in everything from HIIT classes to guided meditation. The spa is one of the best at sea, with a full thermal suite and treatment rooms that feel like a boutique hotel.

If your style of wellness involves a glass of wine on the balcony, they get that too. It’s all about options. No pressure, no forced schedules, just the chance to do you.

Itineraries That Stand Out

Virgin Voyages’ routes are thoughtfully planned. You’re not just hitting the usual tourist traps. Sailings leave from Miami, Barcelona, Athens, San Juan, and even Los Angeles, and take you to places you might not have visited otherwise. There’s a focus on longer stays in port and overnights in some destinations, so you’re not rushing back to the ship at 4:00 pm. More time ashore means more genuine experiences.

The Bimini Beach Club in the Bahamas is a standout. Think of it as your own private island retreat, with the best beach party, plenty of quiet spots, and time to relax however you want. The Mediterranean sailings, in particular, are among my favorites; imagine days in Greek island ports, Italian cities, and coastal gems, with all the comforts of a floating boutique hotel awaiting you each night.

Service That’s Personal and Uncomplicated

The crew makes a difference here. Every person you meet seems to be having a good time at work, and that energy is infectious. They remember your name, your preferences, and even your favorite cocktail if you give them half a chance. Nothing feels forced or fake.

What really stands out to me is the lack of upsell. Gratuities, basic Wi-Fi, basic drinks, and group fitness classes are included. The app has undergone numerous improvements and now makes booking restaurants, shows, or even room service a breeze. No hidden fees or surprises. You can go days without ever needing your wallet, and you don’t spend your vacation standing in line to book dinner or fighting for a lounge chair.

Designed for Connection

One of the joys of cruising with Virgin Voyages is the people you meet. Maybe it’s the relaxed vibe, maybe it’s the open seating and shared experiences, but people let their guard down. You’ll meet couples, solo travelers, friend groups, and, more often than not, you’ll keep in touch long after the cruise is over. The sense of community feels organic, not manufactured.

There are opportunities for connection everywhere, from hosted dinners to pop-up events to social meetups for solo travelers and LGBTQ+ guests. Even if you arrive as a stranger, you’ll leave feeling like you’re part of something bigger.

Final Thoughts

Virgin Voyages isn’t just another cruise line. It’s a fresh take on what travel by sea can be, and it’s proof that you can raise the bar without raising the stress. The focus on inclusivity, incredible food, and entertainment that’s truly for adults creates a space where everyone can feel at home. Add in the thoughtful details, the well-designed spaces, and the genuine warmth of the crew, and you have an experience that’s hard to match.

If you’re looking for a cruise where you’ll feel welcome, entertained, well-fed, and genuinely relaxed, this is it. I don’t just recommend Virgin Voyages, I sail with them every chance I get. It’s a travel experience I want to share with everyone, because you deserve a vacation as unique as you.
