Italy’s Classics vs. Hidden Gems: Making Travel Dreams Truly Yours

Don't let social media convince you to skip Italy's iconic wonders. Your travel dreams are valid, so let's embrace both the famed and the unfamiliar.

There’s a tension I hear almost every week as a travel advisor: “Should I skip Venice? My favorite Instagrammer says it’s overrated.” Or, “Everyone goes to the Amalfi Coast; is it even worth it?” Social media, Reddit boards, and modern travel influencers can make Italy’s icons—Amalfi, Florence, Venice, even Rome—sound too crowded for comfort, outpriced, or simply scams for tourists.

But here’s the truth: the dream of gliding through Venice in a gondola or seeing pastel villages stacked above Amalfi’s blue waters is real, and it’s not wrong to want those “mainstream” experiences. The trick is making Italy your own—by weaving together must-see wonders and quietly captivating corners.

The Reality Behind the “Overrated” Hype

It’s trendy now for influencers to slam Italy’s greatest hits as “overrated,” recommending lesser-known spots instead—like Verona over Venice, or Bari for a “real” southern experience, or Taormina instead of Positano. Some even boast about how many hidden gems they can tick off, as if crowds and popularity automatically subtract from the magic.

But there’s a reason those icons became classic: they spark real joy. A first glimpse of Florence’s Duomo at sunset, the slow drift of a gondola through Venice’s canals, a lemon-scented morning in Positano—these moments are more than social media clichés. And for many travelers, missing them can leave a quietly unspoken regret: the sense of an empty box left unchecked, a postcard never fully come to life.

Stories From the Heart of Italy

One couple came to me dreaming of a classic honeymoon—Venice gondolas, Amalfi’s romance, and sunset dinners on the coast. Social media noise nearly convinced them to avoid these “overrun” spots. But after listening, I encouraged them to claim both their dreams and some secret places of their own.

We blended Venice and Amalfi with a train ride to storybook Verona, where, in a quiet piazza, they discovered they’d be welcoming a baby boy. Then south, to Bari and the wild, volcanic charm of Ischia—places influencers might call “authentic”—and, finally, slow mornings in Rome before heading home. They left as travelers, not just tourists, having tasted both famous flavors and rare, lingering notes.

Another client wanted only one night in Florence en route to a wine resort in Chianti. The vineyard was beautiful, but as a solo traveler, she found herself longing for the bustle, galleries, and café culture she’d barely glimpsed in Florence. “Sometimes, the dream isn’t the one you anticipated,” she wrote me later, “but the one you live, right in the heart of the city.”

What’s Better: Venice or “Somewhere Else”?

Travel influencers will often compare places with a finality—Florence is “too busy,” all Amalfi is “tourist traps”, piazzas are “mob scenes.” In reality, most travelers find joy in their own mix:

  • Soak up the grand, iconic moments—then slip away to quieter villages, medieval towns, island beaches, or local-run trattorias just beyond the main squares.
  • Don’t skip Positano if you’ve dreamed of it since watching Under the Tuscan Sun. But afterwards, let yourself wander backstreets for a gelato, or take a local ferry for a different view.
  • If secluded agrotourismo is your vision, make it happen! But if your heart races at the thought of snapping that classic shot of Florence’s skyline, don’t let anyone shame that joy.
