FAQ for Traveling to North Carolina

Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

When is the best time of year to visit North Carolina?

The best times to visit North Carolina are in the spring and fall. The spring months of April and May offer beautiful blooming flowers and pleasant weather across the state. The autumn, particularly October, is world-famous for its spectacular fall foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers crisp, comfortable weather. Summer is the peak season for the beaches but can be hot and humid inland.

Read our season-by-season guide on choosing the right time to visit North Carolina.

North Carolina’s event calendar is full of unique celebrations. In April, MerleFest in Wilkesboro is one of the nation’s premier folk and bluegrass music festivals. The Lexington Barbecue Festival in October is a massive one-day event celebrating the state’s most famous food. In Wilmington, the North Carolina Azalea Festival is a major spring celebration with parades, concerts, and garden tours.

North Carolina’s weather varies greatly from the mountains to the coast. In the mountains, summers are warm and pleasant while winters are cold and snowy. The central Piedmont and coastal regions have hot and humid summers with frequent thunderstorms. Springs and falls are typically mild and beautiful statewide. The coast is subject to hurricanes during the season from June through November.

North Carolina is best known for its mountain getaways in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, centered on scenic drives, hiking, and exploring charming towns like Asheville. Classic beach vacations on the Outer Banks and the Crystal Coast are also extremely popular. The state is a top destination for golf, especially in the Pinehurst area, and for city breaks in vibrant cities like Charlotte and Raleigh.

You cannot take a major ocean cruise from North Carolina, as the state does not have a home port for large cruise lines like Carnival or Royal Caribbean. However, the state operates an extensive and essential ferry system that provides transportation to the Outer Banks islands like Ocracoke, which can be a scenic and enjoyable part of any coastal vacation.

There are no major ocean cruise line home ports in North Carolina. The main passenger vessel ports in the state are the ferry terminals that serve the Outer Banks and coastal regions, with key hubs in Hatteras, Cedar Island, and Southport.

North Carolina is home to the most visited national park in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which it shares with Tennessee. The state also features two stunning National Seashores, Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, which protect miles of the pristine Outer Banks. The Blue Ridge Parkway, an iconic scenic drive, is also a National Park Service unit.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park in the Outer Banks is a must-see, featuring the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast, perfect for hang gliding and sunset views. Mount Mitchell State Park allows you to visit the summit of the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Chimney Rock State Park offers breathtaking panoramic views and a variety of hiking trails.

North Carolina’s beaches, particularly on the Outer Banks, are world-renowned. The beaches within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore are wild, remote, and beautiful. Nags Head offers a classic beach town experience with easy access and amenities. On the southern coast, Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington and the beaches of Bald Head Island are also popular destinations.

While the main beach roads in popular areas like Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills can be very commercialized and crowded in the summer, the true magic of the coast is often found just beyond them. Prioritize experiences like climbing a historic lighthouse, taking a ferry to a remote island, or kayaking in the sound to get a more authentic and memorable taste of the region.

North Carolina is famous for its barbecue, and the state has two distinct styles: Eastern-style uses the whole hog with a vinegar-based sauce, while Lexington-style (or Piedmont) uses pork shoulder with a vinegar and tomato-based sauce. Fresh seafood, especially shrimp and oysters, is a coastal staple. Other local favorites include Krispy Kreme doughnuts, which originated in Winston-Salem, and sweet Moravian cookies.

It’s the great debate in North Carolina. Eastern-style uses the “whole hog” and is seasoned with a simple, spicy vinegar and pepper sauce. Lexington-style (or Piedmont) uses only the pork shoulder and is served with a “dip” or sauce that includes vinegar, pepper, and ketchup, giving it a reddish tint and a slightly sweeter taste.

Asheville, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a top destination known for its vibrant arts scene, craft breweries, and the magnificent Biltmore Estate. Charlotte is the state’s largest city, a modern financial hub with pro sports and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The state capital, Raleigh, is a hub of museums and culture within the Research Triangle. The port city of Wilmington is beloved for its charming historic riverfront.

The top attractions in North Carolina are its stunning natural landscapes and grand historic sites. The Blue Ridge Parkway is considered “America’s Favorite Drive.” The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is America’s largest private home and a spectacular attraction. Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers incredible biodiversity and hiking. The historic lighthouses of the Outer Banks, such as the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, are iconic landmarks.

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is the largest privately-owned house in the United States, a 250-room French Renaissance château built by George Vanderbilt. A visit includes the house, extensive gardens, and a winery. While the admission price is high, most visitors find the spectacular scale, history, and beauty of the estate to be a worthwhile, full-day experience.

A uniquely North Carolina experience is touring the opulent Biltmore Estate, America’s largest home, in the morning, and then driving the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway to a mountain trailhead for a beautiful hike in the afternoon. The combination of Gilded Age grandeur and accessible, world-class natural beauty is a signature of the Asheville area.

North Carolina is one of the best places to see the American black bear, with a large and healthy population in the mountains. A unique and beloved sight is the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs that roam the beaches of the Outer Banks near Corolla. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park also has a reintroduced herd of elk. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the state’s beaches from May to August.

The famous wild horses are located on the northernmost beaches of the Outer Banks, in the 4×4-only area north of Corolla. The best and safest way to see them is to take a guided tour with one of the local companies that operate open-air vehicles on the beach. It is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the wild horses.

You can visit the site of the first English colony in the New World at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island. The Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk commemorates the first successful powered airplane flight. The International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro is located in the original F.W. Woolworth building where the 1960 sit-ins began.

The most significant natural risk is from hurricanes and tropical storms, which can pose a serious threat to the coast and Outer Banks from June through November. Rip currents are a constant danger at all ocean beaches. The mountainous regions can experience sudden weather changes and should be hiked with caution. Severe thunderstorms can occur statewide in the spring and summer.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic drive that winds through the Appalachian Highlands of Virginia and North Carolina. It is known for its stunning vistas, especially during the fall foliage season. While much of the parkway is open year-round, sections at higher elevations often close in the winter due to ice and snow. Always check the official NPS website for current road status.

The Outer Banks are a long chain of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They are a major tourist destination known for their wide, open beaches, historic lighthouses, and charming villages. The area is often referred to by its popular abbreviation, OBX.

In some areas, yes. The beaches of Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores have designated ramps for off-road vehicle (ORV) access, but a permit and a 4-wheel-drive vehicle are required. The area north of Corolla where the wild horses roam is also accessible only by 4×4 vehicles.

The Research Triangle refers to the region in the Piedmont of North Carolina anchored by three major research universities: North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The area is a major hub for technology, research, and culture.

The Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina offer some of the best fall foliage viewing in the country. The high elevations around Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell often see the first colors in late September to early October, with the colors gradually moving down the mountainsides into the valleys and the city of Asheville through mid-to-late October. A drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the best way to experience it.
