Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start
Popular destinations vary widely by interest. Major cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago are famous for culture and entertainment. For theme parks and family fun, Orlando is a top choice. For natural wonders, iconic National Parks like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite attract millions of visitors.
The USA’s vast size means the best time to visit depends on the region. Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant weather nationwide. Summer is ideal for beaches, national parks, and northern states, but can be very hot and humid in the South. Winter is perfect for ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains or for enjoying warm weather in southern states like Florida and Arizona.
All international visitors require a valid passport. Many travelers may also need a visa, depending on their country of citizenship. Citizens of countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must obtain an approved travel authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to their trip for stays of 90 days or less.
This depends on your country of citizenship. If your country participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you do not need a visa for tourist stays of 90 days or less, but you must have a valid ESTA authorization. If your country is not in the VWP, you will need to apply for a B-2 tourist visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
ESTA stands for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is a mandatory requirement for citizens of the 41 countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) who plan to visit the USA for tourism or business for 90 days or less. You must apply online for ESTA approval at least 72 hours before your departure.
Start by working with an experienced travel advisor. Booking your flight, hotel, and rental car together can often provide significant savings. Traveling during the “shoulder seasons” (spring and autumn) typically offers lower prices than the peak summer months. Being flexible with travel dates and considering flights into secondary airports near major cities can also reduce costs.
The most common options include hotels and motels, which are found in every city and town. Vacation rentals through services like Airbnb and Vrbo are extremely popular for travelers seeking more space or a local experience. In scenic areas, options also include lodges within National Parks, cabins, and campgrounds.
The official currency is the U.S. Dollar ($USD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and are the most common method of payment. ATMs are widely available for withdrawing cash. It is advisable to carry a small amount of cash for minor purchases or tips, but large cash transactions are uncommon.
Key international gateways are spread across the country. On the East Coast, major hubs include New York (JFK), Miami (MIA), and Atlanta (ATL). In the Midwest, Chicago (ORD) is a primary hub. On the West Coast, Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) are the largest entry points.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are the most popular option in most cities. Traditional taxis, pre-booked airport shuttles, and rental cars are also widely available at all major airports. In cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C., public transportation (subway or train) is an efficient and cost-effective option.
Experiences vary by region but often include visiting National Parks like Zion or the Everglades, exploring the museums and monuments of Washington, D.C., driving a scenic route like the Pacific Coast Highway, experiencing the live music scenes in cities like Nashville or New Orleans, and visiting world-famous theme parks in Florida or California.
The USA is generally a safe country for travelers. As in any country, be aware of your surroundings in large cities, secure your valuables, and avoid walking alone in unlit areas at night. The national emergency number is 911. When visiting national parks, follow all park guidelines regarding wildlife and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
Yes, tap water throughout the United States is treated and is considered safe to drink. Bottled water is also sold everywhere if you prefer it.
The U.S. experiences a range of severe weather. The Atlantic and Gulf coasts are susceptible to hurricanes from June through November. The central plains (“Tornado Alley”) can experience tornadoes, primarily in the spring. Wildfires are a risk in the western states during dry, hot summer months. Always check local forecasts and heed official warnings.
For most of the country, renting a car is the best and often only way to explore, as public transportation between cities is limited. The USA is designed for road trips. The main exceptions are a few dense cities like New York City, Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., where excellent public transit makes a car an expensive inconvenience.
Given the country’s immense size, it’s best not to try to see everything at once. Focus your trip on a specific region. For example, plan a West Coast road trip to see California and the national parks, an East Coast tour of historic cities, or a journey through the South to experience its unique music and food culture.
The world’s busiest cruise ports are in Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Port Canaveral, primarily serving the Caribbean. Other major ports include Galveston, Texas for Gulf departures, and Los Angeles and Seattle on the West Coast, with Seattle being the primary gateway for Alaskan cruises.
The most popular itineraries are cruises to the Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean, departing year-round from Florida and the Gulf Coast. In the summer, Alaskan cruises departing from Seattle are extremely popular. Other options include cruises to Mexico, Hawaii, Bermuda, and New England/Canada.
Booking through the cruise line guarantees you will be back to the ship on time and that the tour operator is vetted. Independent bookings, especially in popular ports in Alaska or Hawaii, can offer more customized tours or better value, but you are responsible for managing your time and transportation back to the port.
The East Coast is known for American history, fast-paced cities like NYC and Boston, and scenic autumn foliage. The West Coast is defined by dramatic landscapes, from Pacific beaches to mountains and deserts, and a more laid-back culture. The South offers renowned hospitality, distinct musical genres (jazz, blues, country), unique cuisine, and a complex history. The Midwest is the “Heartland,” known for friendly cities, the Great Lakes, and vast agricultural landscapes.
For history buffs and those who love major, walkable cities, choose the East Coast. For epic road trips and stunning national parks, head to the West Coast. For a deep dive into unique American food and music culture, visit the South. For family-friendly theme park vacations, focus on Florida or Southern California.
The climate varies significantly. The Northeast and Midwest experience four distinct seasons with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The South has milder winters and very hot, humid summers. The Southwest is largely arid and dry with hot summers. The Pacific Northwest is known for mild, damp weather, while California’s climate ranges from Mediterranean to desert.
