Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

What is the best time of year to visit Peru?

The best time to visit Peru depends on the region. For the Andes and the Inca Trail, the dry season from May to October is ideal, with sunny days and clear skies. The Amazon rainforest is best visited during its drier months of July to December. The coastal regions, including Lima, are sunny and warm from December to March, while the rest of the year is often cool and misty.

To enter Peru, you need a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining from the date of your entry. A visa is not required for citizens of the United States, Canada, or the European Union for tourist stays up to 90 days. You may be asked for proof of onward travel.

The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (S/.). While U.S. dollars are accepted in many larger hotels, restaurants, and tour companies in Lima and Cusco, it is essential to have soles for all other transactions, especially in local markets and smaller towns.

For long-distance travel, domestic flights are the most efficient option. For a more authentic experience, Peru has a well-developed bus network that is comfortable and affordable. In cities, taxis and rideshare apps are widely available. To reach Machu Picchu, you will take a train or hike the Inca Trail.

Peru is a moderately priced destination. A mid-range daily budget for a couple can range from $120 to $300, depending on your choice of accommodation and activities. The cost of a multi-day trek to Machu Picchu can be significantly higher, as permits and guides are required.

Peru is an excellent destination for both ocean and river cruising. Ocean cruises on the Pacific coast often stop in Lima and Pisco, offering a chance to see coastal wildlife and ancient ruins. River cruises on the Amazon are a popular way to explore the vast rainforest, providing an immersive wildlife and cultural experience.

The main ocean cruise port is Callao, which serves the capital city of Lima. For Amazon river cruises, the main port of embarkation is Iquitos, a city in the rainforest that is only accessible by air or water.

Spanish is the official language, but many people in the Andes also speak Quechua.

  • Hola: Hello.
  • Gracias: Thank you.
  • Por favor: Please.
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta?: How much does it cost?
  • Pachamama: (Quechua) Mother Earth, a term of deep spiritual significance.
  • Ama Sua, Ama Llulla, Ama Quella: (Quechua) The Inca moral code: Do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy.

In restaurants, a service charge of 10% is often included in the bill. If it is, you are not expected to leave an additional tip, though you may do so for exceptional service. For tour guides, it is customary to leave a tip of around 10-20% of the total tour cost.

The Inca Trail is a world-famous four-day trek that follows a historic route to Machu Picchu. It is a spiritual journey that takes you through the stunning Andean mountains, ancient Inca ruins, and cloud forests, culminating in your arrival at the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu.

Peruvian cuisine is globally renowned and highly diverse, blending influences from its different regions. On the coast, you’ll find fresh seafood like ceviche. In the Andes, the cuisine focuses on potatoes, quinoa, and maize. The Amazon offers unique dishes made from tropical fruits, fish, and exotic meats.

The Nazca Lines are a series of massive geoglyphs etched into the desert floor by the ancient Nazca culture. Created between 200 BC and 500 AD, these mysterious lines form shapes of animals, plants, and geometric patterns. Their purpose remains unknown, with theories ranging from astronomical calendars to sacred offerings.

Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire and is the gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. The city is a fascinating blend of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture, with Inca stone walls forming the foundation for many colonial buildings. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a vibrant cultural hub.

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It is a sacred place in Inca mythology, believed to be the birthplace of the sun. The lake is also home to the Uros people, who live on floating islands made from reeds, a unique cultural sight.

The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is a stunning natural landmark that is home to the majestic Andean Condor. Visitors can watch these enormous birds soar from the canyon’s edge. The region is also known for its terraced farmlands, which were built by pre-Inca civilizations.

Peru is divided into three distinct geographical regions: the desert coast, the high Andes mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. This unique geography means that you can experience three completely different climates and ecosystems within a single country, from the dry coastal desert to the cold, high-altitude mountains and the hot, humid jungle.
