Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start
The best time to visit the Middle East is generally during the spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November). During these months, temperatures are warm but not excessively hot, making it more comfortable for sightseeing. If you are visiting a desert region, these seasons also offer more pleasant temperatures for outdoor activities.

Visa requirements vary significantly by country and your nationality. The United Arab Emirates and Jordan, for example, offer visa-on-arrival for many nationalities, while others may require a pre-arranged visa. Your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from your date of entry. Always check the specific requirements for each country you plan to visit before booking your trip.
You should consult with a travel health professional at least 4-6 weeks before your trip. The CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccinations, as well as Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Some countries may require proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination. If you are traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage, a meningitis vaccination is required for entry.
The Middle East is a vast and diverse region, and safety can vary significantly by country. Many popular tourist destinations, such as the UAE, Jordan, and Oman, are considered very safe, with a strong tourism infrastructure. However, some regions have travel advisories due to political instability or terrorism. Always check your government’s official travel advisories for the latest information on your specific destination.
Packing for the Middle East should prioritize modesty and comfort. Pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. For women, long skirts, dresses, and pants are ideal. For both men and women, it’s respectful to keep shoulders and knees covered. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen are essential, as are comfortable walking shoes.
Many major cities in the Middle East, such as Dubai and Tel Aviv, have excellent public transportation systems including metros and buses. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem are also widely available. For travel between cities or to more remote areas, a rental car or a private driver are common options.
The cost of a trip to the Middle East varies widely. Countries like the UAE and Qatar are known for being expensive, especially when staying in high-end hotels and dining at luxury restaurants. On the other hand, countries like Jordan and Egypt can be more budget-friendly. Your biggest expenses will likely be flights and accommodation.
Travel insurance is highly recommended. Given the potential for high medical costs and the possibility of political instability or unexpected natural disasters, having comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and emergency evacuation is a crucial safety net.
Modesty and respect are key. Public displays of affection, even holding hands, are frowned upon, especially for unmarried couples. The left hand is considered unclean in Islamic culture, so you should use your right hand when giving or receiving objects. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.
Each country has its own currency, such as the UAE Dirham, the Jordanian Dinar, and the Saudi Riyal. While credit cards are widely accepted in cities and at major hotels, it’s wise to carry local cash for small purchases, local markets, and in more rural areas.
For women, it is important to dress modestly by covering shoulders, knees, and cleavage in most public places. A lightweight scarf is a versatile item to carry, as it can be used to cover your head when visiting a mosque or for additional modesty. In more liberal cities like Dubai, Western-style clothing is more accepted, but respectful attire is always appreciated.
If you are traveling during the holy month of Ramadan, be aware that many Muslims will be fasting from sunrise to sunset. During this time, it is respectful to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. Many restaurants will be closed during the day but open for a celebratory feast, called Iftar, at sunset.
Middle Eastern cuisine is a food lover’s paradise. Many traditional dishes are naturally vegetarian, based on staples like chickpeas, lentils, rice, and vegetables. Dishes like hummus, falafel, baba ghanoush, and tabbouleh are delicious and widely available.
A city tour will typically focus on a city’s modern architecture, historic sites, and shopping. A desert safari offers a completely different experience, with activities like dune bashing in a 4×4 vehicle, camel riding, and traditional Bedouin dining under the stars.
The call to prayer, or Adhan, occurs five times a day and can be heard from minarets across the region. It is a beautiful part of local life. You should be aware that during these times, some shops and businesses may close briefly for prayer.
The availability of alcohol varies greatly by country. In some, like Saudi Arabia, alcohol is completely prohibited. In more liberal countries like the UAE, you can find alcohol in licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars. It is important to know the local laws and customs and to drink in moderation.
