Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

What is the best time of year to visit Turkey?

The best time to visit Turkey is during the shoulder seasons of April, May, September, and October. The weather is warm and pleasant, ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities, and the crowds are not as overwhelming as in the peak summer months of July and August.

Read our season-by-season guide on choosing the right time to visit Turkey.

For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry.

Turkey’s transportation network is extensive and efficient. Buses are the most common and affordable way to travel between cities. For longer distances, domestic flights are a time-saving option. The country’s high-speed train network (YHT) is a great choice for travel between major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya.

Renting a car is the best way to explore the scenic coastal routes, ancient ruins, and rural areas at your own pace. However, it is not recommended for navigating major cities, where traffic is often chaotic and parking is difficult. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for U.S. citizens.

The official currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and restaurants in cities, it is essential to carry cash for smaller purchases at local markets, small cafes, or in rural areas where card machines may not be available.

Tipping is a common practice and is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is customary, though it is not a strict requirement. It’s best to tip in cash, as tips added to a credit card may not go to the staff.

It is generally not recommended to drink the tap water in Turkey. While cities have modern water treatment systems, water quality can vary due to old pipes. It is best to stick to bottled water, which is widely available and affordable.

Pack in layers, as the weather can be unpredictable. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring ancient sites and cities with cobblestone streets. A hat and sunscreen are a must for protection from the sun. When visiting mosques or religious sites, bring clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, and women should carry a scarf to cover their heads.

Istanbul’s airports are well-connected to the city center by public transport. You can take a public bus or a shuttle service from both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). Taxis and ride-sharing apps are also available.

Istanbul is an excellent base for day trips. Popular options include a cruise on the Bosphorus Strait, a trip to the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara, or visiting the historic city of Edirne. For those with more time, a day trip to the ancient city of Troy is a great option.

Turkey is a fantastic destination for families. It offers a wide range of family-friendly attractions, from world-class beaches and water parks to ancient historical sites and interactive museums. The culture is very welcoming to children, and the overall cost of a vacation is relatively moderate.

Cruises are an excellent way to see Turkey’s stunning coastline and iconic cities. Major ports like Istanbul, Izmir, and Kusadasi are popular stops for Mediterranean cruises, allowing you to explore the main sights without the hassle of arranging individual travel and accommodation.
