FAQ for Geneva Vacations

Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

What is the best time of year to visit Geneva?

The most popular time to visit is from May to October, when the weather is mild and the lakeside terraces are in full bloom. Summer (July and August) is the peak season for festivals and swimming, while December is magical for its historic “L’Escalade” festival and cozy Christmas markets. If you prefer a quieter experience with crisp air and snowy Alpine views, the winter months are ideal, especially for those using Geneva as a base for nearby ski resorts.

The train is the fastest and most efficient option, taking only 6 minutes to reach the main station (Geneva-Cornavin). One of the best perks for travelers is the complimentary 80-minute ticket for public transport, which you can pick up from the machine in the baggage claim area before exiting. Buses (Lines 5 and 10) are also available and take about 20 minutes, while taxis and ride-shares offer a direct 15-minute door-to-door service.

A car is generally unnecessary and can be a hassle due to limited parking and traffic. Geneva is incredibly walkable, and the public transportation network—consisting of trams, buses, and the yellow Mouettes (water taxis)—is exceptional. If you stay in a hotel, hostel, or campsite within the city, you are entitled to the Geneva Transport Card, which gives you free unlimited travel on all public transport for the duration of your stay.

The Jet d’Eau is the undisputed symbol of the city; this massive water fountain shoots Lake Geneva water 140 meters into the air. Other essential stops include the Palace of Nations (the European headquarters of the UN), the St. Pierre Cathedral in the Old Town, and the Flower Clock (L’horloge fleurie), which pays tribute to Switzerland’s world-famous watchmaking heritage.

Yes, the tap water in Geneva is of excellent quality and is often sourced from the lake or nearby alpine springs. The city is also dotted with historic stone fountains that provide clean, drinkable water. You can safely refill your water bottle throughout the day, which is both sustainable and a great way to save money in an otherwise expensive city.

The official currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While the Euro is accepted in some larger shops, your change will likely be given in Francs at a less favorable exchange rate. Switzerland is highly digitized, and credit cards or contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. However, having a little cash is helpful for small purchases at local markets or for small tips.

In Switzerland, service is included in the price of your meal by law. Tipping is not mandatory, and service staff earn a living wage. However, it is customary to round up the bill to the nearest 5 or 10 Francs as a gesture of appreciation for good service. For a simple coffee or drink, leaving the small change is sufficient.

Geneva is very family-friendly, offering many interactive experiences. The Museum of Natural History is a favorite for children, as is the CERN Science Gateway, where you can explore the mysteries of particle physics. The “Choco Pass” is a popular way for families to sample the city’s best artisanal chocolates, and the many parks—like Parc des Bastions with its giant chess sets—provide plenty of space for kids to run.

Geneva is the perfect gateway to the Alps and neighboring France. Popular day trips include Annecy (the “Venice of the Alps”), the mountain resort of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc for world-class views, and the lakeside town of Montreux, home to the historic Chillon Castle. For cheese and chocolate lovers, a trip to Gruyères is a quintessential Swiss experience.

Citizens of countries like the U.S., Canada, and the UK generally do not need a visa for short tourist stays (up to 90 days). Your passport must be valid for at least three to six months beyond your departure date. Be aware that electronic travel authorizations (such as ETIAS) are becoming a standard requirement for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen Area; always check the latest entry requirements before you fly.
