Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start
The best time to visit Sweden depends on your interests. The summer months of June, July, and August offer long days, the midnight sun in the north, and the warmest weather, which is ideal for hiking and outdoor activities. For a chance to see the Northern Lights, the best time to visit is during the winter months from September to March, when the skies are darkest.

Sweden is a member of the Schengen Area. For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area. Beginning in 2026, a new travel authorization system (ETIAS) will be required for visa-free visitors.
Sweden’s rail network is highly efficient and is the best way to travel between cities. The national rail operator, SJ, provides a convenient and comfortable way to travel between major cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. For reaching more remote areas in the north, domestic flights are a time-saving option.
A rental car is not necessary for a vacation centered in the major cities, which are very well-served by public transportation. However, a car is a great option if you plan to explore the scenic countryside or the remote regions of Lapland. Be aware that winter driving can be challenging and requires snow tires, which are legally mandated from November to March.
The official currency of Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK). Sweden is a largely cashless society, and credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, even for small purchases. While it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand for emergencies, you can generally get by using only a credit card.
Tipping is not a cultural requirement in Sweden, as a service charge is normally included in the bill. While it is not expected, leaving a small tip of around 5-10% is a common gesture for exceptional service in restaurants.
Yes, the tap water in Sweden is of excellent quality and is perfectly safe to drink. There is no need to buy bottled water, and you can confidently refill your water bottle from any tap.
Pack in layers, as the weather can be unpredictable. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. A waterproof and windproof jacket is a must, and warm layers (preferably wool or fleece) are crucial, especially if you’re traveling to the north in the winter. If visiting in the summer, a sleep mask can be helpful due to the long daylight hours.
The fastest way to get from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the city center is by taking the Arlanda Express train, which takes about 20 minutes. A more affordable option is the commuter train or a bus service. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available.
Cruises are an excellent way to see Sweden’s coastal cities. Stockholm is a major port for cruises in the Baltic Sea, and a cruise allows you to experience the capital and other coastal towns without the hassle of arranging individual travel and accommodation. River cruises are also popular for exploring the country’s extensive lakes.
Sweden is a fantastic destination for families. It is a very safe country, and the public transportation system is easy to navigate. It offers a wide range of family-friendly attractions, including Skansen, an open-air museum in Stockholm, and various outdoor activities.
For travel during the peak seasons of summer (June-August) and the winter holiday season, it is highly recommended to book flights and accommodations at least six months in advance to secure the best rates and availability. For popular tours, especially those to see the Northern Lights, booking even further ahead is a good idea.
