FAQ for Svalbard Vacations

Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

What is the best time of year to visit Svalbard?

The best time to visit Svalbard depends on your desired experience. For wildlife viewing, long daylight hours, and cruises, the summer months from June to September are ideal. The midnight sun is from late April to mid-August. For a chance to see the Northern Lights, visit during the polar night from November to February. Snow sports like dog sledding and snowmobiling are best enjoyed during the “sunny winter” from March to May.

Svalbard is not part of the Schengen Area, but as a part of the Kingdom of Norway, you must pass through a Schengen country to get there. For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for a stay in Svalbard, but your passport will be checked upon arrival. If you need a visa to enter a Schengen country, you will need a multiple-entry visa.

The most common way to get to Svalbard is by air. There are daily flights from Oslo and Tromsø, Norway, to Svalbard Airport (LYR). The flight from Oslo takes about three hours. It is also possible to get there via cruise ship, especially during the summer months.

A rental car is not necessary. The main town of Longyearbyen is small and very walkable. There is a public airport shuttle that serves all scheduled flights, and taxis are available. For excursions outside of town, you are required to travel with a guide, so transportation is typically provided by tour operators.

The currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Svalbard is a largely cashless society, and credit cards are widely accepted. While it is a good idea to have some cash on hand for emergencies, you can generally get by using only a credit card.

Tipping is not a cultural requirement, as service charges are included in the price of services. While it is not expected, a small tip for exceptional service in restaurants or for guides is a common gesture but is entirely at your discretion.

Yes, the tap water in Svalbard is of excellent quality and is perfectly safe to drink. There is no need to buy bottled water, and you can confidently refill your water bottle from any tap.

Pack in layers, as the weather is highly unpredictable. Essential items include a waterproof and windproof jacket, waterproof pants, and warm layers like fleece or wool. Comfortable, waterproof hiking boots are also a must. For summer, a sleep mask can be helpful due to the 24-hour daylight.

Cruises are an excellent way to see Svalbard’s dramatic coastal landscapes and abundant wildlife. Expedition cruises are particularly popular, as they allow you to get close to glaciers and spot polar bears, walruses, and seals. Cruising is the only way to get a full overview of the archipelago, as a land-based vacation is restricted to a small area.

Svalbard is a fantastic destination for adventurous families. It is a very safe place and offers a wide range of unique, kid-friendly activities, such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, and guided wildlife viewing tours. Many hotels and tours cater to families.

Popular activities include dog sledding (both on snow and on wheels in summer), snowmobiling, glacier hiking, kayaking in the fjords, and wildlife viewing. During the polar night, hunting for the Northern Lights is a popular activity.

It is highly recommended to book flights, accommodations, and especially cruises at least 6-12 months in advance. Given the high demand and limited supply, booking early is crucial to securing the best options and prices.
