What is the best time of year to visit the Republic of Georgia?

The best time to visit Georgia is during the shoulder seasons of May, June, and September. The weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and hiking. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Georgia for a stay of up to one year for tourism. Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

The bus and minibus network, known locally as marshrutka, is the most common and affordable way to travel between cities. For a more comfortable and scenic option, the train network connects major cities like Tbilisi and Batumi. For reaching remote areas, a rental car or hiring a private driver is the best option.

A rental car is the best way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes and reach more remote areas at your own pace. However, be aware that driving can be challenging due to aggressive drivers and unpredictable road conditions, especially in cities. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.

The official currency of Georgia is the Georgian Lari (GEL). While credit cards are accepted in cities, especially in Tbilisi, it is essential to carry cash for smaller purchases, public transport, and for use in rural areas where card machines may not be available.

Tipping is a common practice and is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is customary, especially if a service charge has not been included in the bill. It is best to tip in cash.

The tap water in Georgia is generally safe to drink in most urban areas. Many locals drink it without issue, as the country has high-quality water sources, many from mountain springs. However, water quality can vary. Many visitors prefer to drink bottled water to be cautious.

Pack comfortable walking shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking on uneven streets and hiking trails. Layers are a good idea, as the weather can change quickly, especially in mountainous regions. A light rain jacket is also recommended. It’s also a good idea to bring one conservative outfit that covers shoulders and knees for visiting religious sites.

Tbilisi is an excellent base for day trips. Popular options include visiting the ancient capital of Mtskheta, the stunning Gergeti Trinity Church near Kazbegi, or the Kakheti wine region, known for its traditional wine-making.

Georgia is a fantastic destination for families. It is a very safe country, and the culture is very welcoming to children. It offers a wide range of family-friendly attractions, from exploring historic castles and museums to enjoying outdoor adventures.

Land tours are the most common way to see Georgia, as they can cover multiple destinations, including cultural, historical, and culinary experiences. You can hire a private driver or join a group tour, which can be an excellent way to see the country without the hassle of driving.

For travel during the peak season (July and August), it is highly recommended to book flights and accommodations at least three to six months in advance. Booking well ahead is crucial for securing the best options and prices.
