U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. However, starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries must obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before arrival. This is an electronic link to your passport that is mandatory for entry into the Schengen Area. Additionally, you will be required to register your biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) upon your first point of entry into Europe under the new Entry/Exit System (EES).

The most efficient public transit option is the Express Bus (Line 81), which runs directly from the airport to the Cannes bus station in about 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a short shuttle or tram to the Nice-Saint-Augustin train station and catch a regional TER train to Cannes. Private transfers and taxis are also readily available at the airport arrivals terminal, typically costing around €70 to €90.

The high-speed TGV INOUI train is the preferred way to reach Cannes from Paris. Direct trains depart from Paris Gare de Lyon and arrive at the Gare de Cannes in approximately 5 hours and 15 minutes. It is highly recommended to book these tickets at least three months in advance to secure the best fares, as prices rise significantly closer to the travel date.

Renting a car is not recommended if you plan to stay within the city center. Cannes is very walkable, and parking can be both difficult to find and extremely expensive. A car is only beneficial if you intend to take a land tour of the more remote hilltop villages in the backcountry, such as Mougins or Grasse. For coastal travel to Nice or Monaco, the regional train is faster and more convenient.

Cannes is served by the Palm Bus network, which covers the city and neighboring communes like Le Cannet and Mandelieu. A single ticket costs approximately €1.50, and tickets can be purchased directly from the driver or via the Palm Bus app. For travel along the coast, the regional TER trains are the most reliable way to hop between nearby towns like Antibes or Juan-les-Pins.

In France, a 15% service charge is automatically included in all restaurant and café bills by law (service compris). While tipping is not mandatory, it is common practice to leave a small amount of pourboire for good service. Leaving €1 to €2 for a casual meal or rounding up to the nearest Euro for a coffee is a standard gesture. For high-end dining, a tip of 5% to 10% in cash is appreciated for exceptional service.

Yes, the tap water in Cannes is of excellent quality and perfectly safe to drink. The city’s water supply is strictly monitored and meets all European health standards. Refilling a reusable water bottle at your hotel or from the public fountains is a cost-effective and sustainable way to stay hydrated while exploring the city.

First-time visitors typically prefer staying in La Croisette to be in the heart of the glamour, close to luxury boutiques and the Palais des Festivals. For a more historic and atmospheric experience, the Le Suquet (Old Town) district offers winding cobblestone streets and panoramic views of the bay. If you are looking for a quieter stay with better beach access, the Palm Beach area at the eastern tip of the peninsula is a great choice.

Yes, Cannes is a very popular port of call for Mediterranean cruises. Because it is a tender port, ships anchor in the bay and transport passengers to the Old Port (Vieux Port) via small boats. From the pier, it is a short five-minute walk to the Palais des Festivals and the beginning of the Croisette, making it one of the easiest French Riviera ports to explore on foot without a formal excursion.

The Cannes Film Festival is almost always held in May. During this time, the city is extremely crowded, and hotel rates are at their highest. While most film screenings are reserved for industry professionals, you can still experience the atmosphere by watching the red carpet arrivals at the Palais des Festivals or attending the “Cinéma de la Plage,” which offers free nightly screenings on the Macé beach for the public.

Cannes is an ideal hub for land tours of the Côte d’Azur. A 25-minute ferry ride from the Old Port will take you to the Lérins Islands, where you can visit the fort that once held the Man in the Iron Mask. Other popular day trips via the regional train include Monaco (60 minutes), Nice (40 minutes), and the perfume capital of Grasse (25 minutes).
