Not Everything You Need to Know, But a Good Place to Start

What is the best time of year to visit Dubrovnik?

The ideal time to visit Dubrovnik is during the shoulder months of May, June, and September. During these windows, the Adriatic Sea is warm enough for swimming, the weather is sunny yet mild, and the crowds are significantly thinner than in July and August. If you visit in the winter, be aware that many coastal ferries and tourist-oriented restaurants may be closed.

Croatia is a member of the Schengen Area. For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date. Note that while Croatia uses the Euro, you must still pass through standard Schengen border controls if arriving from a non-Schengen country.

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is approximately 10 miles from the city center. The most popular option is the official airport shuttle bus, which timed to coincide with flight arrivals and drops passengers near the Pile Gate (Old Town entrance). Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also available, though they cannot enter the pedestrian-only Old Town itself.

Staying inside the walls offers an authentic historic atmosphere, but it comes with challenges, including high prices, narrow stairs, and noise from late-night foot traffic. Many travelers prefer the Lapad or Ploče neighborhoods, which offer better beach access, modern hotel amenities, and stunning views of the fortress from a distance.

The City Walls are Dubrovnik’s most famous attraction and take about 90 to 120 minutes to walk. It is highly recommended to purchase the Dubrovnik Pass, as the cost of the pass is often the same as a single ticket for the walls but includes entry to several museums and public transportation, providing much better value.

The official currency is the Euro (€). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and souvenir shops, you will need cash for small purchases at local bakeries, tipping, and at some smaller bars or local markets.

Dubrovnik’s beaches are primarily pebble or rocky, so bringing water shoes is highly recommended. Banje Beach is the most convenient to the Old Town but can get very crowded. For a more relaxed experience, take a 10-minute ferry to Lokrum Island, which offers shaded pine forests and rocky lagoons perfect for swimming.

Dubrovnik is very safe and welcoming for families, though the many stairs and cobblestone streets can make strollers difficult to navigate. Kids usually enjoy the cable car ride to Mount Srđ, the maritime museum, and the various boat excursions to nearby islands.

Tipping is appreciated but not as mandatory as in the U.S. In sit-down restaurants, leaving a tip of 10% to 15% for good service is standard. In cafes or bars, it is common to simply round up the bill to the nearest Euro. Always try to tip in cash directly to your server.

Yes, Dubrovnik is one of the most popular cruise ports in the Mediterranean. Most ships dock at the Gruž Harbor, about 2 miles from the Old Town. Frequent shuttle buses and taxis transport passengers to the Pile Gate. Because thousands of passengers can arrive at once, it is wise to check the local cruise schedule to plan your City Walls walk during quieter hours.

The Jadrolinija ferry line and various private catamarans connect Dubrovnik to the Elaphiti Islands, Mljet, Hvar, and Korčula. For a quick escape, the ferry to Lokrum Island departs every 30 minutes from the Old Town port. For longer trips to islands like Hvar, it is best to book your catamaran tickets at least a day in advance during peak season.

Beyond a swimsuit and sun protection, the most essential item is a pair of shoes with excellent grip. The limestone streets of the Old Town (the Stradun) have been polished smooth by centuries of foot traffic and can be extremely slippery, especially when wet. Sturdy sandals or sneakers are much safer than flip-flops or heels.
