What is the best time of year to visit Morocco?

The best time to visit Morocco is during the shoulder seasons of spring (mid-March to May) and fall (September to October). The weather is warm and pleasant for sightseeing, and the crowds are not as dense as in the peak summer months. The coastal regions are pleasantly mild year-round.

For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.

Morocco has an efficient transportation network. The train is a comfortable and affordable option for intercity travel, especially on the high-speed line between Tangier and Casablanca. For reaching smaller towns and rural areas, the bus network is extensive and budget-friendly. Domestic flights are also a great way to cover long distances quickly.

A rental car is the best way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes and reach more remote areas at your own pace. However, it is not recommended for navigating major cities where traffic can be chaotic. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). The Dirham is a closed currency, meaning you cannot get it outside of Morocco. While credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants in cities, it is essential to carry cash for smaller purchases at local markets, taxis, and for use in rural areas where cards may not be accepted.

Tipping is a common practice and is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of 10% is customary. It’s best to tip in cash, as tips added to a credit card may not go to the staff. For other services like taxis, it’s common to round up the fare.

It is generally not recommended to drink the tap water in Morocco, even in major cities, as the quality can vary and may contain minerals and bacteria your body is not accustomed to. Stick to bottled water, which is widely available and affordable.

Pack light, breathable, and loose-fitting clothing. Both men and women should dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, to show respect for local customs. Women should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. A hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential.

The most common and affordable way is by airport shuttle bus (Line 19), which runs frequently. Taxis are also readily available. It is important to agree on the fare beforehand to avoid overpaying, or to use a ride-sharing app where available.

Marrakech is an excellent base for day trips. Popular options include visiting the stunning coastal town of Essaouira, hiking in the Atlas Mountains, or exploring the ancient kasbah of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Morocco is a fantastic destination for families. It offers a wide range of family-friendly attractions, from exploring the bustling souks and medinas to riding camels in the desert. The culture is very welcoming to children, and there are many activities to enjoy.

Cruises are an excellent way to see Morocco’s coastal cities. Major ports like Casablanca and Tangier are popular stops for Mediterranean cruises, allowing passengers to explore the main sights without the hassle of arranging individual travel and accommodation.
