FAQ for Cruise Vacations

Not everything you need to know, but a good place to start.

What is typically included in my cruise fare?

Most fares include your cabin, meals in the main dining rooms and buffet, and various onboard activities and entertainment. Be aware that many things cost extra, such as specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, soda, shore excursions, spa treatments, and Wi-Fi. A daily service charge for gratuities is often automatically added to your bill. Ultimately, the inclusivity of your cruise fare varies widely from cruise line to cruise line, so consult with your cruise travel advisor to get the best value.

Although you can often book directly with the cruise line, the best way to book is through an experienced cruise travel advisor. For the best prices and cabin selection, book 6 to 12 months in advance. Last-minute deals are sometimes available if you are flexible. Flying to your departure port a day early is highly recommended to avoid any travel delays.

The currency is usually the U.S. Dollar. Your room key, or cruise card, is used for all onboard purchases and serves as your ID. All charges are applied to your onboard account and settled with a credit card at the end of the trip. You’ll need cash for tips for porters at the terminal and for purchases and tips in ports of call.

Cabins range from interior staterooms with no windows, to oceanview cabins with a window, and balcony cabins that have a private outdoor space. Suites offer the most space and additional amenities. There are also staterooms designed for solo travelers, as well as those made for families with kids. Your choice depends on your budget and how much time you plan to spend in your cabin.

Pack your passport and all medications in a carry-on bag. Bring a swimsuit and cover-up if relevant for your destinations. Be mindful of the ship’s dress code, which is typically casual during the day but often requires “smart casual” attire for dinner in the main dining room. Some cruises also have formal nights. Ask your travel advisor what to expect on your selected cruise line.

Pack all necessary medications, including motion sickness remedies, in your carry-on. Pay close attention to the safety briefing at the beginning of your cruise. Use hand sanitizer frequently, and be aware of your surroundings both on the ship and in ports of call. Keep your stateroom door locked and store valuables in the cabin safe.

If you’re concerned about seasickness, consider booking a cabin on a lower deck and in the middle of the ship, as these areas experience the least motion. Over-the-counter medications and wristbands are also effective and widely available. Most ships have a medical facility that can provide assistance if needed.

Shore excursions are planned activities and tours in the ports your ship visits. They can range from city tours and museum visits to adventure sports and beach days. You can book them through your cruise line for convenience or with independent tour operators for more variety and often a lower price.

Your cell phone will likely not work once the ship is a few miles out from land. Most cruise lines offer Wi-Fi packages for a fee that allow you to stay connected to the internet and messaging services. Be cautious about using cellular service at sea, as it is often satellite-based and can result in very expensive roaming charges. Fortunately, onboard Wi-Fi has improved greatly in the last decade.
